IMPACT OUT OF PLAYOFFS
Montreal, Quebec – The Montreal Impact is out of the playoffs after losing in shootout yesterday against the Long Island Rough Riders before a crowd of 6,679 fans at the Claude-Robillard Stadium.
The Montreal club, who finished first overall in the regular season, will not be able to bring the A-League Championship back to Montreal like in 1994.
“I am proud of my players. They gave the effort. We were confident that we could came back from behind after losing in Long Island and we almost did. Unfortunately, we lost the shootout which is like tossing a coin,” said head coach Valerio Gazzola after the game.
The Impact started the day on a good note by winning the first game 2-0.
Mauro Biello scored the first goal at the 34th minute with a long shot from outside the penalty area.Veteran Lyndon Hooper gave his team a 2-0 lead at the 77th minute after scoring his first goal of the playoffs.
This win allowed the Impact to tie the series and force the deciding mini-game.
Mini-game & shootout
No goals were scored in the 30 minutes mini-game so both teams went into a shootout. Montreal lost after scoring only one goal against three for Long Island.
Long Island will play against the Carolina Dynamo in the final of the Eastern Conference.
