IMPACT LOSE 2-1 IN LONG ISLAND

Long Island, New York – The Long Island Rough Riders beat the Montreal Impact 2-1 last night at Hoftstra Stadium before a crowd of 3,585 in the opener of their A-League soccer Northeast Division championship series.

Long Island forward Flavio Ferri scored the winning goal at the 55th minute after a corner kick by his teammate Carlos Ledesma.

“We came back strongly after they scored the first goal, but couldn’t do the same after their second one, said Impact captain John Limniatis. We are going to have to work harder next game or we are going to be eliminated.

The second match of this series against Long Island will be played on Sunday (4:00 p.m.) at the Claude-Robillard Stadium. If Montreal wins, a 30 minutes mini-match will be played immediately after to determine the winner of the series.

Hector Wright scored the first goal of the game at the fourth minute to give the Rough Riders a 1-0 lead.

The Impact scored one minute later when Lloyd Barker received a pass from Onandi Lowe. It was Barker’s first goal of the playoffs.

The Impact was without midfielder Nick DeSantis and defender Carl Fletcher. The two players are currently with the Canadian National Team for a World Cup qualifying match against El Salvador tomorrow.

Long Island’s Ernest Inneh and Dahir Mohammed were serving a one-game suspension for too many yellow cards.
